It's not that this stuff doesn't happen at other people's houses.
It's just that it's WAY more likely to happen at my house.
Last night I was tucking the 8 year old into bed and my tween came in and said:
"Mom? There's a plant growing out of my sink."
OK, you don't hear that every day...
Yes. There is a plant growing out of your sink.
Apparently, the hamster food, which contains sunflower seeds, spilled into the drain and seed + water = plant.
I'm willing to wager that a more meticulous housekeeper might have noticed this development sooner.
So we named him "Sinky" and I thought it would be great fun to just let him live there until my 11-year-old suggested that roots and plumbing might not be the best combination.
R.I.P., Sinky......on the bright side, maybe I do have a green thumb after all.

OMG, my kids are grown now and the hamster is resting peacefully in the back yard, but yep, exact same thing happened to me. I am still laughing. Just found your blog today, too funny! Congrats on being #11!
Hey, housekeeping is for people who don't have lives (or blogs)!
Haha! It looks so green and healthy to be a sink plant with no daylight!

I love 'surprise' gardening.
The only pumpkin I ever grew started underneath the deck after the previous years outside pumpkin carving.
Hey, you can't be that bad of a housekeeper...look how clean that sink is! The pretty sprout is just an added bonus!
*Slinks off to clean my sinks*
I would have put money on the fact that THAT could never happen! :) Too funny! Who knew?
Nanny claims that doctor's once discovered a small oak tree growing out of her nose when she was little after her brother shoved an acorn in one of her nostrils...I don't know if I believe that, but if I were your tween, I'd SO connect a water hose to that sink and run it to my tub as to create a second faucet to ...Never have I ever seen a faucet inside that you can do that too! I want one.
Glad you held the balls together over Xmas.
I would venture to day that Sinky would make it a while in my house too.
That is crazy! Also, very smart of your 11 year old to realize that it might be a problem. I also would think it was a fun science experiment to keep it!
I like that your 11 yr old was the voice of reason! Hey, look, it's Bob the Builder...
LOL...If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it. Too funny!!!
aww...sinky is cute. I may not be growing plants in my sink, but I grow actual corn in the horse trailer from not cleaning it out often enough.
B2B's comment is too funny!!!
I would have laughed my ass off if I found that...too funny!
Oh should have let it grow! Plumbing-shlumbing....that's blog gold right there!
Now THAT is taking Going Green way too far! And I might be looking for another housekeeper who is a gardener, too. TOO funny!
it has not happened here but it is something that would totally happen here.
So do you know how to say "You're fired" in Spanish?
That is so funny. Such a cute little sprout, it probably fought so hard to make it's way outta there.
Smart little cookie you got there to realize it would clog things up!
Sinks in every patio across America, coming this Spring.
OMG. No kidding - you DEFINITELY don't see that every day!
Okay...that.is.hilarious!!!!
I don't even know what I would do. But, WTG to the 11yo for noting what it might do to your plumbing.
Between this and your recycling of lint, you're so green!
that's hysterical. I"m gonna go throw some marijuana seeds down my drain now... :P
jaime, I am on the way to your house!
That is awsome!
I think you just started the newest trend in America
Ch-Ch-Ch Chia!
oh, what a cute little sink plant! you could not have done that if you tried!
That's a new one on me!
that is a good one
hmmm...I wonder how big it would have gotten if you left it? Then would it be splattered with toothpaste and soap? That is pretty funny.
lol. good stuff...too bad your 11 yr old had to point out the whole "bad idea for the plumbing" thing. it would have been fun to see weekly updates of that...!?!
How in the heck does something like that happen?! I mean what was it attached to? And if plants are going to start growing out of sinks, then maybe alligators really can come in threw the toliet!
Best drain-plant I've ever seen. Hands down.
RIP Sinky.
OH MY!!! That is so funny! I never would have thought something could grow like that! Love it!
This is so so so funny. I would love to be a fly on your wall because I wonder what else happens that you don't blog about.
Kim
Aww.... Stinky is cute.
But roots and plumbing are no good. I'm dealing with that right now and it sucks. But mine is a tree trying to kill my sewer line....
That's awesome! SO much better than the fuzzy brown stuff that used to grow in my college roommate's sink... never did figure out what exactly that was... ick...
LMAO!!!! You are just so green.
There are just no words. I am laughing too hard to type properly!
Question: Why didn't the cleaning ladies discover this.... hope yo didn't give them a Christmas tip!!!
Atleast the little plant was growing in the 8 yr olds sink...and you don't have to wonder what type of plant it is!
LOL!!! sooo funny!! it looks so fresh and green and yummy! now i know where to plant the herb garden i've been thinking about starting! ;)
LOL!!!!!!!!! How funny!!!
That is so impressive!! I would've wanted to keep it there too - I wouldn't have thought about the roots - and the plumbing and the problems that could arise.
Bye Sinky - your life was much too short.
LOL, that's great!
I just don't know what to say. That's funny and horrifying all at the same time. I didn't think that animal food was supposed to germinate. LMAO!
Ya know, we never did take our pumpkin, yeah, that would be the one from Halloween, down after Halloween because it snowed and the carcass kind of froze to the front steps. Eventually it slid off and into the garden bed. I kinda wonder what's going to await us next year, because the carcass is GONE! Maybe we'll be growing our own pumpkins. No, probably not. My luck isn't that great.
i think it's lovely...you could transform it into a terrarium, or pool and add some goldfish.
So THAT'S how you grow a plant? In the sink? Because I've had horrible luck doing it the traditional way. I might have to give it a try. Though I only have fish food on hand right now.
Rofl! That really made me laugh and I'm kinda jealous but knowing how my family keeps house it could soon happen to us too!
Great blog!
That is funny. Poor Sinky. I am still laughing out loud at that.
That. Is. Awesome.
oh man that's too funny!
I just had your ChiaSink thing for lunch. I went to a vietnamese restaurant and had a bowl full of them.
So if you swallow a sunflower seed then.......
